Building a Character

To play Dawn of the Merciless, you will need a character! Some aspects of the character will be chosen for you, and some you will decide. If the choices do not fit the character you have in mind, work with your DM to craft something to your liking.

Parts of a character

  • Archetype - there are several character types to choose from, each with their own benefits and flaws. See the list here.

  • Distinctions - these describe your character’s personality. Your character should have 2 distinctions, with 2 benefits (a d8 when used) and 1 flaw (a d4 when used) each.

  • Attributes - each archetype has an array of mental and physical attributes, with points distributed across. Having a d10 in one category means your character excels in this area, while a d6 means your character is average.

  • Abilities - each character has 2 abilities, with access to all of the special effects (SFX) associated with each. Your archetype determines which abilities you have access to. See the list here.

  • Assets - Every character has a basic pack of things they own and you can declare small items you would reasonably have during play. But what item is your character known for? What tool do they use the most? What do they cherish? You get to create 2 of these assets for your character.

  • Name - everyone needs a name. Who are you?

  • Description and backstory - While not strictly necessary, it can be a wonderful way to add to the storytelling elements of the game.
