Playing Dawn of the Merciless

  • Dawn of the Merciless uses Cortex Prime. It has a strong storytelling focuses. Gameplay is flexible and creativity is encouraged!

  • The kingdom of Abrania is roughly equivalent to 13th century medieval europe in terms of technology. They also have elemental magic:

    • ore (stone and dirt)

    • blaze (fire)

    • frost (ice and water)

    • light (light and shadow)

    • storm (wind and lightning)

The animals and people you would expect to see are the same as in our world.

  • Every conflict is determined by rolling multiple dice based on character and situation. It’s handy to have at least 3 of each d4, d6, d8, d10, and d12. Or open up an online dice app! No d20s, percentage dice, or d100s are needed.

  • Character Points, or CP, are a sort of currency for doing amazing things. Each character has Distinctions and Abilities that you can spend CP on. You’ll start each session with 3, but to gain more you will have to earn them through rolling hitches (1’s), Distinctions, or Ability SFX.

  • Go to the Character Building page for more information. You can also read the list of archetypes that your character can be and pick abilities you would like to use.

And when you are ready, feel free to download the Character Sheet PDF.

  • Everyone deserves to have a fun time! If you don’t like how your character plays, work with your GM between sessions to make any changes needed.

  • Each session you play will earn you 1 XP. This XP can be spent on the following:

    • 1 XP - step up an Ability’s Basic Action

    • 1 XP - step up one SFX

    • 2 XP - step up an Attribute

    • 3 XP - add a third Ability

  • All conflicts, including combat, are decided by dice rolls. You can learn more on the Conflict page.
